Director and General Manager of Morris Inn and Notre Dame Conference Center
Joseph Kurth was named director and general manager of Morris Inn and Notre Dame Conference Center effective April 15, 2013. In this capacity, he is responsible for reopening and maintaining the newly renovated and expanded Morris Inn as a property that reflects the traditions, culture and history of Notre Dame. In addition, he oversees the Notre Dame Conference Center, the only IACC-certified conference center in the area, integrating its operation with that of the Inn to optimize performance through a combined strategic direction.
Kurth has broad experience in the hotel industry. Before joining the University, he was general manager of The Pfister Hotel, the 307-room AAA Four Diamond flagship property for Marcus Hotels and Resorts located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Here he managed a $25M budget, oversaw eight division managers and 350 associates, and implemented comprehensive annual training certification programs. He also introduced innovative concepts such as the Artist in Residence Program and the Pfister narrator. The Pfister Hotel was winner of the 2011 Marcus Hotels President’s Choice Award and named one of the Top 25 Luxury Hotels in 2012 by TripAdvisor.
Prior to that, he served as executive assistant manager of Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel, a 342-room, AAA Four Diamond luxury beach front property located in Santa Monica, California. Also, he had operational responsibility for The American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin, the only AAA Five Diamond resort hotel in the Midwest. He has also held management positions for several Hyatt Hotels and for the HBE Corporation.
Kurth also served as vice president, customer relations for Pulte Homes Sarasota Division, Sarasota, Florida. He was responsible for 500 annual home closings, along with over 3,000 homes in warranty period with annual revenue of $150M.
Kurth has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin, where he majored in hotel and restaurant management. He also completed the General Managers Program offered through the Office of Executive Education at Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration.
In March, 2016, Kurth was named incoming Chairman of the Indiana Restaurant & Lodging Association Board.
Kurth and his wife, Andrea, reside in South Bend, Indiana.
