For their Town Hall meeting with Executive Vice President, John Affleck-Graves on February 22, the staff of Auxiliary Operations staged a surprise “pep rally.” All participants wore The Shirt from 2016, which was provided to them along with noise makers, pompoms and flags. Segura Arts Studio announces traveling exhibition

Fine Art Print by Maria Tomasula

The exhibition “Images of Social Justice from the Segura Arts Studio” is being displayed at the Snite Museum of Art and will continue through December 4th. Over 50 fine art prints will be featured. A reception is scheduled for Sunday, October 2nd from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. with a gallery talk at 3:00 by artist and Notre Dame professor Maria Tomasula. Accompanying the show is an exhibition brochure reproducing 23 of the works with an essay by art critic Sarah Kirk Hanley. A selection of prints from this exhibition will move to the Institute for Latino Studies’ Galeria America in the spring and will travel nationally over the next few years.…

Larose Saint Jean has been hired as the new director of St. Michael’s Laundry, effective February 1st.  

Larose is coming from the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Denver, Colorado, where he has been serving as Director of Laundry for Crothall Services.  He has also served in managerial positions in other Ritz Carlton properties, including Ritz Carlton Hotel New Orleans and Ritz Carlton Resort of Naples, Florida.  …

Michael J. Klosinski, director of St. Michael’s Laundry, died unexpectedly on Sunday, August 9.

Klosinski joined the University as director in 2004.  Since that time, he received the Association of Laundry Managers (ALM) Laundry Manager of the Year Award for the Ohio River Valley Chapter four times. He was a three time finalist for National Laundry Manager of the Year and was awarded ALM’s prestigious Heywood Wiley Manager of the Year Award in 2006.…

Recent construction completed to address unanticipated foot traffic

“Things we found since re-opening” is the way Joe Kurth, director and general manager of Morris Inn, put it as he explained new construction just completed at the Inn. The original design for the Inn’s 2012-2013 renovation was based on normal hotel traffic. It did not allow for the enhanced foot traffic experienced at Notre Dame on special event weekends such as home football games, Commencement, Alumni Reunion Weekend, etc.

Einstein Bros Bagels opens at Hammes Bookstore

Einstein Bros Bagels capped off a week-long celebration of specials and giveaways with its Grand Opening on Friday, January 23rd.  Officially opening November 10, 2014, Einstein’s is occupying the Bookstore space formerly used by Irish Ink. According to David Harr, associate vice president for Auxiliary Operations, “We embraced the opportunity to expand our retail portfolio of offerings on campus with the addition of another nationally recognized brand. Einstein Bros Bagels brings its own distinct flavor and all day menu concept to the campus community.”

With this designation, the Morris Inn will sponsor several athletic events and offer promotions for Notre Dame fans. Center for Culinary Excellence Opens

On November 11, 2014, the new Center for Culinary Excellence was introduced to the campus community. Located in the former Food Services Support Facility, the Center houses a new catering kitchen, cook and chill operation, bakery, and Grab-n-Go program and will prepare food for the dining halls, campus cafes, and catered events. From here, food supplies can now be delivered directly to campus units instead of being delivered to a central storage area first.…

Council of Chefs Wins 2014 Presidential Team Irish Award

Notre Dame’s Council of Chefs, a 13-member culinary team led by Executive Chef, Don Miller, has been awarded a 2014 Presidential Team Irish Award.

The purpose of the Council is to gather the culinary leadership on campus to address culinary concerns such as recipe quality, recipe procedures, productivity, inventory controls and professionalism. The members come from all campus Food Service operations, with each one holding a culinary supervisory position. Recently, the group has made significant progress tying together the areas of menu and recipe management with food and labor costs, resulting in better expense controls and improved budget performance.

In naming the Council of Chefs as Team Irish Award winners, it was noted that the member culinarians have taken initiatives that nurture values consistent with the University of Notre Dame’s mission. Their work significantly impacts thousands of students, faculty, staff and visitors on a daily basis.
